LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30, 2016 — Cortney Shegerian, an attorney at the Los-Angeles based employment discrimination firm Shegerian & Associates, recently commented on the $150,000 sexual harassment settlement awarded to former employees of Dunkin’ Donuts. The case was brought against Hillcrest Marshall, Inc., the owner of multiple Dunkin’ Donuts franchises in Westchester County, New York.
“The former employees of this Dunkin’ Donuts location were subjected to unwelcome sexual advances from their superior,” Shegerian states. “One of the victims was even physically and verbally abused after rejecting his advances, and then fired for reporting his behavior to the police.”
“This case shows that sexual harassment can happen to anyone within any organization—whether it is a corporate office or a donut franchise,” Shegerian went on to say. “The case illustrates how important it is for every employer to have an anti-discrimination policy in place and to create a culture where employees are encouraged to report inappropriate behavior.”
“The young ladies who stepped forward to report this deplorable behavior should be applauded for their bravery,” Shegerian says. “So many women fear retaliation for speaking out against sexual harassment, but these ladies have proven the law will protect you when your employer fails to do so.”
