Carney Shegerian, trial lawyer and founder of the Los Angeles-based employment discrimination firm Shegerian & Associates, released a statement regarding Matt Lauer’s recent termination from NBC News. The network revealed last week during the Today show that Lauer was fired after an employee filed a complaint against him alleging inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.

Matt Lauer hosted the Today show for two decades and was often thought of as the face of NBC News,” Shegerian says. “Firing Lauer must have been a difficult decision for NBC, but it was the right decision to make.”

“NBC has not released much information on the nature of the allegations against Lauer,” Shegerian continues. “But, other media outlets have reported that this was not an isolated incident, and that he victimized many women over the course of his employment with NBC.”  Lauer did issue an apology, in part saying he feels “sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused.”

“Lauer follows in the footsteps of other high-profile media figures, including Bikram Choudhury, Charlie Rose, Mark Halperin, and Bill O’ Reilly, who were all fired after news of their sexual misconduct became public,” Shegerian says.

“The fall of Lauer and other disgraced men in media sends a clear message that sexual harassment will no longer be tolerated by victims or employers,” Shegerian states. “It doesn’t matter how well-liked or powerful someone is, he or she will face the consequences for this kind of inappropriate and illegal conduct.”
